It's giving up something in order to get something else.

What it means is: If you blindly pursue the small benefits in front of you, you will eventually miss the truly wise and visionary direction.
Following does not mean blindly following the trend, but seeing clearly who is worth following.
Don't give up great opportunities in the future just for the sake of small gains in front of you.
Choosing the right direction is more important than working hard.
