How the Bazi Star Ratings Are Worked Out
The free Bazi calculator rates each year, month and ten-year Luck Pillar from 1 to 5 stars. This page explains the rules, so you can check every rating and see what the stars cannot tell you.
SHORT ANSWER
What the stars mean
A star rating from 1 to 5 shows how a given year, month or ten-year Luck Pillar interacts with your Bazi chart. More stars means the period carries more supportive influences for that area, and fewer stars means more friction. Three stars is neutral. Every rating comes with its reasons, so you can see what drove it.
The five areas are Overall, Career, Wealth, Relationships and Energy & wellbeing. The stars are a reading aid for reflection and planning. They are not a prediction, and they do not replace a full reading.
For reference only. The stars are a general, rule-based guide. For an accurate reading of your own chart, check with Master Mandy Lim: message on WhatsApp.
STEP 1
Your chart: Day Master strength and helpful elements
First the tool estimates whether your Day Master has a lot of its own support. It adds up the elements of the visible characters, with the month branch counted most because it describes the season of birth.
| Character | Weight |
|---|---|
| Month branch | 3 |
| Day branch | 2 |
| Month stem | 1.5 |
| Year stem, year branch, hour stem, hour branch | 1 each |
The share of weight that belongs to the Day Master's own element, or the element that produces it, gives the estimate: 50% or more is strong, under 33% is weak, and anything in between is balanced.
- Strong: the helpful elements are the ones that use up energy: output, wealth and authority. Peers and resources are eased off.
- Weak: the helpful elements are the Day Master's own element and the element that produces it.
- Balanced: the scarcest elements (up to two) are treated as helpful, and any element that appears three or more times is eased off.
STEP 2
What is compared with each period
A year, month or Luck Pillar has its own stem and branch. The tool checks three things.
- Element fit. Do the period's stem and branch elements belong to your helpful elements (+) or the ones to ease off (−)?
- Ten Gods. Which Ten God is the period stem, and which are hidden in the period branch (the main hidden stem counts fully, the others 0.4)? These are grouped as peer, output, wealth, officer and resource stars.
- Branch relations. Does the period branch clash with, combine with, harm or form a punishment with a branch in your chart? A clash scores −1, a punishment −0.6, a harm −0.5 and a combination +0.6, and the effect depends on which pillar it touches.
| Pillar touched | Stands for | Strongest effect on |
|---|---|---|
| Year branch | Family, outer circle | Spread evenly, small |
| Month branch | Career, work life | Career (×1.2), Overall and Wealth (×0.5) |
| Day branch | You and your partner | Relationships (×1.2), Energy (×0.8), Overall (×0.6) |
| Hour branch | Later life, children | Spread evenly, small |
A period stem that directly clashes with your Day Master (Jia–Geng, Yi–Xin, Bing–Ren, Ding–Gui) lowers Overall and Energy.
STEP 3
How each area is scored
| Area | Raises the score | Lowers the score |
|---|---|---|
| Wealth | Wealth stars (full weight for a strong Day Master, less for a weak one); output stars; helpful elements | Peer stars, which add competition and shared costs; elements to ease off |
| Career | Officer stars (for a weak Day Master, only the gentler Direct Officer); resource stars; output stars for a strong Day Master; helpful elements | Seven Killings for a weak Day Master; month-branch clashes |
| Relationships | The partner star (wealth for men, officer for women); combinations with the day branch; helpful elements | Day-branch clash, harm or punishment; peer stars for men; Hurting Officer for women |
| Energy & wellbeing | Filling an element missing from your chart; helpful elements | Piling onto an element your chart already has three or more of; draining stars for a weak Day Master; clashes with the day or month branch |
| Overall | Half the average of the four areas, plus element fit and relations | Clashes, especially with the day and month branches |
Turning scores into stars. The score is centred on 3 stars, multiplied by 1.25, rounded to the nearest half star, and limited to 1 to 5.
- A year is the year pillar's score blended with your current Luck Pillar (75% year, 25% Luck Pillar).
- A month is the month pillar's score blended with that year's score (55% month, 45% year). Bazi months start at solar terms, for example Tiger month begins around 4 February.
- A Luck Pillar is scored on its own stem and branch.
EXAMPLE
A worked example
A woman born on 15 June 1990 at 08:30 (UTC+8) has the Day Master Xin (yin Metal). Metal and Earth give her only 19% of the weight, so the tool treats her Day Master as weak, and her helpful elements are Metal and Earth. In 2027 (Ding-Wei, Fire Goat) the year stem is her Seven Killings. The Goat branch combines with both her month and year branches (+), her current Luck Pillar adds a resource star (+), and the Seven Killings stem is heavy for a lighter Day Master (−). The tool shows 4 stars for Career, and lists each of these reasons so you can judge them yourself.
LIMITS
What the stars cannot do
- They use one simplified rule set. A trained reader weighs more, including the season in detail, hidden-stem strength, the Useful God, and combinations of three branches.
- They do not know your circumstances, decisions or questions.
- Without a birth time the Hour pillar is missing, so ratings that touch later life and children are less precise.
- The wellbeing stars are not medical advice.
- The calculator uses the clock time you enter and does not apply true solar time.

FAQ
Star rating questions
Are the star ratings a prediction?
No. They are a rule-based reading aid. Each rating compares the stem and branch of a year, month or Luck Pillar with your own chart using fixed rules, and shows the reasons behind the score. Life outcomes depend on far more than a chart.
Why does my friend with a similar chart get different stars?
Stars depend on the whole chart: the Day Master, how strong it is, which elements are scarce, and which branches clash or combine with the period. Small differences in any of these change the result.
Do different Bazi schools rate years differently?
Yes. Readers weigh the season, hidden stems and interactions differently, and some use other methods for the Useful God. These ratings use one simple, published rule set so that anyone can check them.
Is the wellbeing rating medical advice?
No. The wellbeing stars describe energy, routine and balance of elements in the chart. They are not a medical assessment. Speak to a doctor about any health concern.
