Bazi Without a Birth Time: What You Can Still Learn
You can still get a Bazi reading without your birth time. A reader can work from three pillars (year, month and day), which shows your Day Master and elements, but the hour pillar and some detail will be missing. The best first step is to try to find your birth time from official records.
How can I find my birth time?
- Check your birth certificate. Some countries record the time.
- Ask the hospital for birth records.
- Ask parents or relatives, and check baby books or family papers.
- If the time is only approximate (for example, “early morning”), tell your reader, as a two-hour window can still help.
What does a three-pillar chart show?
The year, month and day pillars still give your Day Master, element balance, Ten Gods for those pillars and the Luck Pillars. The hour pillar, traditionally linked to later life and children, will be missing. The month pillar can also be uncertain if a solar term falls on your birth date. Try the free calculator with “I do not know my birth time” ticked.
What is birth-time rectification?
Rectification is a method where a reader compares known life events with possible charts to estimate the most likely hour. It involves judgment and is not exact. Be cautious of anyone who claims certainty about a rectified time.
Time zone and daylight saving
Use the clock time shown on your record and note the place of birth. If daylight saving was in effect, tell your reader. The calculator asks for the UTC offset in effect at birth.
The twelve Bazi hours
| Hour (branch) | Clock time | Hour (branch) | Clock time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zi (Rat) | 23:00-01:00 | Wu (Horse) | 11:00-13:00 |
| Chou (Ox) | 01:00-03:00 | Wei (Goat) | 13:00-15:00 |
| Yin (Tiger) | 03:00-05:00 | Shen (Monkey) | 15:00-17:00 |
| Mao (Rabbit) | 05:00-07:00 | You (Rooster) | 17:00-19:00 |
| Chen (Dragon) | 07:00-09:00 | Xu (Dog) | 19:00-21:00 |
| Si (Snake) | 09:00-11:00 | Hai (Pig) | 21:00-23:00 |
If your birth time is close to a boundary (for example 10:55 or 11:05), the hour pillar depends on exact timing, so tell your reader.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I get an accurate Bazi reading without a birth time?
You can get a reading from three pillars. It will have less detail than a four-pillar chart, and a reader should say what is uncertain.
Is an approximate birth time good enough?
Often yes. A two-hour window usually fixes the hour pillar unless the time sits near a boundary. Tell your reader how sure you are.
Which hours belong to which Bazi hour?
Each Bazi hour covers two clock hours, for example the Rat hour is 23:00 to 01:00. Exact boundaries depend on the method used.
