What Is Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny)?
Bazi (八字, “eight characters”) is a traditional Chinese system that turns your birth year, month, day and hour into four pillars of two characters each, a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Practitioners study the chart to understand personality, strengths and the timing of life phases.
How is a Bazi chart built?
A Bazi chart has four pillars: the Year, Month, Day and Hour pillars. Each pillar has one Heavenly Stem (top) and one Earthly Branch (bottom), so the chart has eight characters. That is where the name comes from: ba means eight and zi means character.
| Pillar | Built from | Traditionally associated with |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Birth year | Early life, family background, the wider society |
| Month | Birth month (by solar term) | Parents, career environment, the “season” of the chart |
| Day | Birth day | The self (the Day Master) and close partnership |
| Hour | Birth hour | Later life, children, long-term outcomes |
These associations come from the classical tradition. Different schools emphasise them differently, so treat them as a reading framework rather than fixed facts.
What are Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches?
There are 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches. The stems are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren and Gui. The branches are the twelve zodiac animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
Each stem and branch belongs to one of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and is either yin or yang. A reading looks at how the elements in your chart support, restrain or balance each other.
Your Chinese zodiac animal is only the branch of your birth year. It is one of eight characters in a full Bazi chart, which is why two people with the same zodiac animal can have very different charts. See What is a Day Master? for the most important character in the chart.
Why does your birth time matter?
The Hour pillar changes every two hours, so an exact birth time changes one quarter of the chart. Without a birth time, a reader can still build a three-pillar chart (year, month and day), but the reading will have less detail.
It also helps to know where you were born. For readings that need precision, practitioners may adjust the clock time to local solar time.
When does the Bazi year start?
Bazi does not use the Lunar New Year to start the year. The Bazi year changes at Lichun (立春, “start of spring”), a solar term that falls around 3 to 5 February. Bazi months also follow solar terms, not the lunar calendar.
This is why someone born in January or early February can belong to the previous Bazi year, even if the Chinese New Year has already passed.
What are Luck Pillars?
Beyond the four natal pillars, Bazi uses Luck Pillars (大运), ten-year cycles that start at a calculated age and run in sequence through your life. Each year also has its own annual pillar. Readings compare the natal chart with the current Luck Pillar and the year to discuss timing: for example, a period for building, a period for caution, or a period for change.
What Bazi can and cannot do
Bazi is a framework for reflecting on patterns, strengths and timing. It can give structure to questions about career direction, relationships and planning. It cannot guarantee outcomes, and it does not replace medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice. For a deeper look at this question, read Is Bazi accurate?
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Bazi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
No. The Chinese zodiac is only the animal of your birth year (the Year Branch). Bazi uses all four pillars, eight characters in total, including the year, month, day and hour.
Do I need to be Chinese to get a Bazi reading?
No. A Bazi reading only needs your birth date, birth time and birth place. It works for anyone, and readings can be explained in plain English.
What do I need for a Bazi reading?
Your birth date, your birth time (as exact as possible), your gender and the main question you want to explore.
Can I get a Bazi reading without my birth time?
Yes, but it will be less detailed. A reader can work from three pillars, though the Hour pillar adds information about later life and finer details.
How long does a Bazi reading take?
It depends on the format. Our online Bazi reading is a 60-minute video consultation with up to 10 questions, a session recording and a written report.
