What Is a Day Master in Bazi? The 10 Day Masters Explained

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born, the top character of your Day Pillar. In Bazi it represents you, the centre of the chart. It is one of ten stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren or Gui.

The 10 Day Masters at a glance

Each Day Master combines an element with yin or yang. Classical Bazi describes each one with a natural image. The images are teaching tools; they help readers remember the character of each stem.

Day MasterElementClassical imageOften described as
Jia 甲Yang WoodA tall treeUpright, growth-minded, leader-like
Yi 乙Yin WoodVines and flowersFlexible, cooperative, adaptable
Bing 丙Yang FireThe sunWarm, visible, generous
Ding 丁Yin FireA candle or lampFocused, perceptive, inward warmth
Wu 戊Yang EarthA mountainSteady, reliable, protective
Ji 己Yin EarthFertile soil or a gardenNurturing, careful, practical
Geng 庚Yang MetalRaw metal or an axeDecisive, direct, principled
Xin 辛Yin MetalJewelleryRefined, sensitive, detail-oriented
Ren 壬Yang WaterThe ocean or a big riverExpansive, mobile, resourceful
Gui 癸Yin WaterRain or mistIntuitive, quiet, reflective

The descriptions are tendencies from the classical tradition, not a complete personality. The full chart, including the other seven characters and the Luck Pillars, changes how a Day Master expresses itself.

How do I find my Day Master?

Your Day Master depends on the exact calendar day of birth. Because the Chinese sexagenary cycle counts days in a 60-day rotation, you cannot work it out from your zodiac animal or birth year. You need a Bazi chart calculator or a practitioner. Be careful with births late at night: the Hour pillar and day boundary can matter, so ask your reader how they handle births around midnight.

Is a “strong” or “weak” Day Master good or bad?

No. In Bazi, a Day Master is described as stronger or weaker depending on how much support it receives from the rest of the chart. This is not a ranking of a person. It guides which elements and environments tend to balance the chart, and which Luck Pillars may feel supportive or demanding.

What does a Day Master reading cover?

In a consultation, the Day Master is the starting point. A reader looks at how it relates to the other elements in your chart, the current Luck Pillar and the year ahead, then discusses your questions about career, relationships, money or timing. Read What is Bazi? for how the full chart is built.

Day Master and the other pillars

The Day Master is the reference point, but the other seven characters decide how it behaves. A Wood Day Master born in spring (a Wood month) is described as supported. The same Day Master born in autumn (a Metal month) is described as pressured by Metal. That is why two people with the same Day Master can differ.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my Day Master the same as my zodiac sign?

No. Your zodiac animal comes from your birth year branch. Your Day Master is the stem of your birth day, so it can be completely different.

Does my Day Master decide my personality?

It is a starting point, not the whole picture. The other characters in the chart, the element balance and your life experience all shape how a person behaves.

Can two people share the same Day Master?

Yes. Many people share each of the ten Day Masters, but their full charts and Luck Pillars are different.

Can I change my Day Master?

No. It is fixed by your birth day. What readers discuss is how to work with it, for example, which environments and timing suit it.
