The Five Elements in Bazi: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water
In Bazi, every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch belongs to one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). A reader studies how the elements in your chart support, restrain and balance each other, using two cycles: the productive cycle and the controlling cycle.
What are the Five Elements?
The Five Elements (五行, wu xing) are not physical substances. They are five categories used to describe qualities of change. Each has traditional associations with a season, a direction and a colour.
| Element | Season | Direction | Colour | Heavenly Stems |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Spring | East | Green | Jia, Yi |
| Fire | Summer | South | Red | Bing, Ding |
| Earth | Between seasons | Centre | Yellow | Wu, Ji |
| Metal | Autumn | West | White | Geng, Xin |
| Water | Winter | North | Black or blue | Ren, Gui |
The productive cycle (生)
Each element nourishes the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In a chart, an element that is produced by another is said to receive support from it.
The controlling cycle (克)
Each element also restrains another: Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood. Control is not “bad”. A measured amount of control gives structure; too much can overwhelm.
What does a balanced chart mean?
Readers look at which elements are strong, weak or missing in your eight characters, and how they relate to your Day Master. A missing element is not a flaw. It simply shows where the chart gets little of that quality, which a reader may discuss through timing, environment and choices. Schools differ on how to choose the most helpful element (the Useful God), so ask a reader to explain their reasoning.

Common misunderstandings
- “Wood” does not mean “tree-like personality”. The elements describe qualities of change. A reader considers the whole chart.
- A weak element is not a flaw. It shows where the chart has less of that quality.
- The elements do not “cancel” each other out. They interact in cycles. The interaction depends on strength, position and timing.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the Five Elements system the same as Western elements?
No. Bazi uses Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, which describe phases of change. The Western classical elements are Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
What if my chart has no Fire (or another element)?
It means the eight characters contain little of that element. Readers then look at Luck Pillars and annual pillars, which can bring the missing element at different times.
Do I need to wear colours or use objects for my element?
A Bazi reading is a reflection framework. Colour and object recommendations vary by school and are optional.
