Bazi Luck Pillars (Da Yun) Explained
A Luck Pillar (大运, da yun) is a ten-year cycle in a Bazi chart, derived from the month pillar. Its direction depends on gender and the birth-year stem, and its start age is estimated from the distance between your birth date and a solar term. Readers compare the current Luck Pillar with the natal chart to discuss timing.
How are Luck Pillars worked out?
- Start from the month pillar. The first Luck Pillar is the next (or previous) pillar in the 60-step sexagenary cycle.
- Choose the direction. Pillars run forward for a yang-year male or a yin-year female, and backward for a yin-year male or a yang-year female. (A year is yang if its stem is Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng or Ren.)
- Find the start age. Count the days from birth to the next solar term (for forward) or the previous one (for backward). Traditionally, three days equal one year of age.
- Add a pillar every ten years. Each Luck Pillar lasts ten years.
How do readers use Luck Pillars?
The natal chart is the baseline. The Luck Pillar adds a ten-year background, and the annual pillar adds the theme of a single year. Readers study how these layers interact with your Day Master and elements to discuss phases of building, caution, opportunity or change. They describe tendencies, not fixed events.
Annual pillars
Each year has its own stem and branch, for example Ding-Wei for 2027. See the 2027 Fire Goat year guide. The Bazi year starts at Lichun, around 4 February.

A simple way to read a Luck Pillar change
When a new Luck Pillar begins, readers compare its stem and branch with your Day Master and with the branches in your natal chart. They ask whether it adds an element you lack, strengthens an element you already have too much of, or creates clashes or harmonies with your branches. The result is a description of the background conditions of the next ten years: more support, more pressure, or a shift in focus. It is not a prediction of specific events.
